Arriving in Vietnam

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

The last day before our departure turned into a blur of packing and getting ready. Finally, we left with a huge pile of luggage. It barely fit in the cab: the driver complained we should have really booked a van! We generally travel light, but those many adoption agency recommended gifts have sure added a few bags!

The flight was uneventful, the only exciting part being the health checkpoint on arrival, where they measured temperature of all passers-by, and where I was singled-out for a more thorough measurement with an old-fashioned thermometer and sent to the quarantine section. I knew I didn’t have any fever, but I was tired and jet-lagged, and so I reacted more to the surrounding temperature. When the doctor finally read my thermometer, he kept looking at it for a long time … clearly trying to make up his mind. Waiting felt like an eternity. Finally, he waved me through. I was so relieved!

We are in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Tired and jet-lagged, we checked into the Spring Hotel, centrally located in the Dong Khoi area. The hotel was recommended by our agency; it’s clean and very comfortable, with free internet access, and very friendly staff. They all know about our boys, and keep asking “When are the boys coming?”

We have not had much energy for sightseeing yet, but took at least a small walk around the area. We saw the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Reunification Palace and the Hotel de Ville which now houses the People’s Committee. We finished with a wonderful meal at Lonely Planet’s pick Quan An Ngon. Yummy! For any tropical fruit juice lovers, try their fresh guava juice. It has almost grassy notes, but it is sooo refreshing.

Getting Ready

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Time is moving fast – in less than two weeks the adoption of our three boys will be finalized! We are working full speed to finish all the preparations.

We have our Vietnamese visa, and our flights are booked.  Getting a good price on international one-way tickets for three toddlers turned out to be challenging – we could not book it online, and any over-the-phone prices were quite a bit higher. We ended up going through a travel agent that specializes in adoption travel, Erle from Azumano Travel. He booked us on China Airlines via Taiwan.

We are still waiting for a confirmation from our agency about our hotel reservations; apparently they have an organization-wide retreat, and so things are slow. We know that our first choice, the family suite in Elegance 4, is full, and that Melia for some reason does not allow 3 children in a room. So our agency steered us towards reconsidering the Grand, where most adopting families stay. I am also hoping to get my list of questions about the boys’ schedule answered.

We have finished shopping for the many gifts our agency advised us to bring. We are in the process of finishing child-proofing  and removing and packing any last fragile objects from our living room, and of course, packing!

It is exciting and yet hard to believe that in a week we are getting on a plane.

TA – We Are Going to Vietnam!

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

We got The Call today! All documents have been approved and we are cleared to go to Vietnam to finalize the adoption of our boys and bring them home! We are very, very excited. Devon Tai, Niko Nhan, and Xander Tam have been in our hearts since their referral -  now they will join us in our home, and become our sons also on paper. We can’t wait!

We are expected to be in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) on June 27; we plan to leave around June 24.  We better get to work on tickets, hotels and visa! It is really finally happening!

Still No News

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

It’s been almost three weeks since our papers arrived to PC, which is the usual processing time,  so we expect to hear something very soon, hopefully by the end of this week. We can’t wait to hold the boys in our arms and bring them home.

Meanwhile, we have been keeping busy finishing preparations at the house, finalizing our gift shopping for Vietnam, and overall getting ready. At the last minute we decided to remodel the boys’ bathroom, and paint the hallway on the lower floor. Today we started packing away various fragile items and overall baby proofing the living room to make it more toddler-friendly.  At least all these activities keep us occupied to make the wait a bit easier!
